Helena City commissioners have finally given the green signal to install cameras at Memorial Park and at least once city parking garage. This impending decision was finally made on Monday night after weighing upon all the pros and cons of installing surveillance cameras in various parts of the city.
According to Parks and Recreation Director, Amy Teegarden and Helena Parking Commission Director, Jim McHugh, installing motion-sensitive cameras in parking lots will bring down vandalism rates in the city. Jim McHugh says that a few days earlier only he signed a hefty check of $6,400 to repair the elevator at the brand-new 15th Street Garage that was damaged by the vandals.
But Montana ACLU Director Niki Zupanic had other views about this 'installation of the cameras' issue. Zupanic said that many citizens of the city won't be happy to find their each and every moment being recorded. Though this was one of the major points of argument, the decision was made in the favor of the Teegarden and McHugh.
